Our Mission

At Mandela Learning Village, our mission is to ensure that all children, regardless of their ZIP code, have access to the same opportunities as those in more affluent neighborhoods. Our goal is to ignite a passion for learning, not have that hindered due to limited resources, because we believe every child deserves a bright future regardless of their circumstance. Committed to our motto, "It takes a village to raise a child" (African proverb), we serve children and families in our community by providing no- to low-cost academic tutoring, nutritious snacks, safe space experiences through field trips, and art movement: yoga, meditation, and dance.

Origins

Mandela Learning Village was founded by Mwalimu Donna Evans, a former student activist whose belief in the power of self-determined education drove her to build something lasting in Compton. Inspired by the idea that every community deserves to educate its own children, she established an independent school rooted in academic excellence, cultural pride, and the village spirit reflected in its name. Named after Nelson Mandela, the school has grown into a K–6 learning community committed to developing scholars who are confident, curious, and culturally grounded.
